The Role

The Mechanic - Cryogenic is an exciting opportunity for someone coming from a Mechanic/Vehicle repair background to take the next step in their career into the fascinating world of cryogenics. This role will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, refurbishing and servicing of cryogenic, vacuum isolated tanks used for the storage and transport of cryogenic, liquefied gases such as liquid nitrogen, oxygen, and helium. We will offer full and comprehensive training including visits to other European sites to learn cryogenics and trucks/trailer repairs and overhauls. The role involves ensuring the safe operation of cryogenic tanks, maintaining system integrity, and performing diagnostics and repairs on tanks and tank components, from small component repairs to full refurbishments. The ideal candidate will have deep experience with vacuum systems, tools and methods to test them and create the vacuum; however, we are also open to those from a vehicle mechanic background. A strong understanding of safety protocols related to cryogenic gases would be very beneficial.

What Will You Do

Cryogenic vacuum isolated tank testing, maintenance & repairs:

  • Checking and servicing cryogenic gas storage tanks, their insulation, vacuum, transfer systems, cryogenic pumps, pipes, valves and safety valves.
  • Drying the tank, re-creating the vacuum test method.
  • Perform full refurbishments on cryogenic tanks, especially checking and servicing cryogenic gas storage tanks, their insulation, vacuum, transfer systems, cryogenic pumps, pipes, valves and safety valves.
  • Inspect cryogenic tanks and piping for leaks, wear, and overall system integrity, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Replace or repair damaged or malfunctioning parts such as valves, gauges, pumps, regulators, and pressure relief devices.
  • Inspect tanks for leaks using helium leak testing.

  • Technical Troubleshooting: Utilize diagnostic tools and equipment to assess and resolve technical problems.

  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform periodic inspections and preventive servicing. Monitor the condition of cryogenic tanks to maintain isolation and cooling performance. Maintain maintenance logs and records of repairs, inspections, and modifications.

What Do You Bring

  • High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in mechanics, mechatronics, cryogenics, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Certification in cryogenics or mechanical repair is an asset.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with cryogenic tanks, trailers, or related equipment.
  • Proven experience in the repair and maintenance of trailers, with a focus on those used for transporting liquefied cryogenic gases.
  • Strong knowledge of cryogenic storage and transfer systems, including handling of liquefied gases and pressure components.
  • General knowledge of trucks/trailer technology; proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems in cryogenic trailers.
  • Familiarity with vacuum systems and cryogenic insulation techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair guides.
  • Experience working with DOT regulations and standards for cryogenic or hazardous materials transport.
  • Welding and fabrication skills for trailers and pressure vessel repair and maintenance (stainless steel).
  • Familiarity with safety protocols related to transporting hazardous materials.

Our Benefits

  • Permanent role based in Barlborough, near Sheffield.
  • Generous holiday entitlement package totaling 33 days annual leave.
  • Howden Pension Plan with employer contributions up to 7%.
  • Enhanced family leave and pay provisions; free onsite parking; healthcare cash plan.
  • Group Life Assurance and Group Income Protection.
  • Access to wellbeing and discounts through the Howden Benefits portal.
  • ESG initiatives involvement (STEM ambassador & volunteering).

Quantum Computing Hiring Trends 2026: What to Watch Out For (For Job Seekers & Recruiters)

As we move into 2026, the quantum computing jobs market in the UK is shifting from hype to harder-edged reality. The wildest forecasts have softened, some early-stage start-ups have pivoted or been acquired, and investors are more selective. At the same time, governments, big tech, defence, finance and pharma still see quantum as strategically important – especially in algorithms, quantum-safe cryptography, optimisation and materials simulation. The result: fewer “blue-sky” roles with no clear roadmap, and more demand for quantum talent that can plug into real programmes, real products and real timelines. Whether you’re a quantum job seeker planning your next move, or a recruiter building teams across hardware, software, theory or adjacent fields, understanding the key quantum computing hiring trends for 2026 will help you stay ahead.

Quantum Computing Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK quantum computing hiring has shifted from credential‑first screening to capability‑driven evaluation. Employers now value provable contributions across the stack—algorithms & applications, compilation & optimisation, circuit synthesis, control & calibration, hardware characterisation, error mitigation/correction (QEM/QEC), verification/benchmarking, and hybrid HPC/quantum workflows—plus the ability to communicate trade‑offs, costs and feasibility to non‑quantum teams. This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews and how to prepare—especially for quantum algorithm engineers, quantum software/compilers, experimentalists, quantum control & firmware, cryo/readout engineers, quantum error correction researchers, verification/benchmarking specialists, and quantum‑adjacent product managers. Who this is for: Quantum algorithm/applications engineers, compiler/optimisation engineers, control/firmware engineers, experimental physicists & hardware engineers (superconducting, trapped ion, photonic, spin/neutral atom), cryogenics & RF/microwave, QEC researchers, verification/benchmarking specialists, quantum‑HPC orchestration engineers, and product/BD roles in the UK quantum ecosystem.

Why Quantum Computing Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

Quantum computing has long been considered an elite subfield of physics and computer science. But as quantum technologies advance—from fault-tolerant hardware to quantum algorithms and quantum cryptography—they’re moving closer to real applications in finance, materials simulation, optimisation, cryptography and more. As this transition happens, UK quantum computing careers are becoming increasingly multidisciplinary. Quantum systems are no longer just the domain of physicists and quantum software engineers. If quantum technologies are to be trusted, adopted and regulated, professionals must also incorporate expertise in law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design. In practice, quantum computing projects now intersect with data governance, risk, human interaction, explainability and communication. In this article, we’ll explore why quantum computing careers in the UK are shifting to multidisciplinary roles, how these five supporting fields intersect with quantum work, and what job-seekers & employers should do to keep up in this evolving frontier.
