Job Description:
Would you like to help us deliver innovative Photonics designs that form part of our self-protection systems installed on fast jet, UAV, land and naval platforms?
We have exciting opportunities for talented and proactive Photonics Engineers. Whether you're near the beginning of your career or have a wealth of experience, we have a place for you at Leonardo. Depending on the role you take, you may be able to carry out some of your work from home (Custom or Hybrid working)
What you will do
As a Senior/Principal Photonics Engineer, you will work with the support of experts in their field, using world-class facilities to deliver designs, and help form the complex electronic systems that meet our challenging future customer requirements.
The scope of work can range from design and technical problem solving to product development. This role may even take you across the UK or abroad for technical reviews.
What we need from you
You should have experience in most of the below
Design techniques using one or more of VPI, Ansys, Synopsys or similar simulation tool.
Physical realisation of Photonics circuits or spread benches
Derivation of and reporting against design requirements
A structured approach to design
Photonic test methods and equipment. Including laser safety.
Ability to de-bug failing hardware or test equipment
Interfacing with customers, sub-contractors or in-company stakeholders
Security Clearance

It would be nice if you had:
Experience within the defence industry
You might have an HNC/HND or Undergraduate Degree (Electronic Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics) or you may just have lots of skills and experience gained through your hard work.
Applications are also sought from students completing their PhDs and looking for their first employment in industry.
Experience in some of:
Development of Photonic elements such as Modulators, Photo-detection or Laser Arrays
Photonic integrated Circuit (PiC) Design
System in Package (SiP) Design
RF over Fibre
RF / Microwave components e.g. Low Noise Amplifiers, Trans-impedance amplifiers
RF Chain Analysis
Model driven engineering using Matlab and Simulink
Automating test equipment using Labview
Assisting early careers engineers
