Job Summary

GKN is actively engaged in a series of major, multi £M development programmes with the long term aim of enabling zero emission flight on a series of new aircraft programmes. We want to enable the complete electrification of Aircraft powered by Liquid Hydrogen, Fuel cells and Cryogenically cooled networks and motors. As such we’ve already built up a significant capability with an international team of over 70 specialist Engineers working on Liquid Hydrogen based propulsion systems, including storage (tanks), Fuel management, Fuel cells, Electrical networks, Motors and Inverters, with Cryogenics being an enabling technology. This ground breaking technology is maturing rapidly and we’re searching for specialist Engineers and Scientists who want to work with us in this rapidly changing, dynamic, multifunctional environment to help us push further and faster as we win more programmes and the market accelerates.

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Motor Control Engineer/Specialist to develop electrical propulsion system which will help shape the future of flight. You will be involved in the full development cycle of high-power, high-performance electrical drives for future aircraft propulsion. 


You will have the opportunity to contribute from requirements and specification, through to development and test definition, helping to prove and evolve novel technologies in a demanding, ground-breaking application. You will be an integral member of a team that is embarking on a significant and challenging technology development project; this five year project will be a major stepping-stone towards achieving greener aviation thus helping protect our environment for future generations.

Job Responsibilities

Work in conjunction with academic research partners, identify and investigate in detail the technical challenges which must be overcome to meet project objectives Transfer and translate research findings into practical design rules and sizing tools for power electronic converters Develop analysis and simulation capabilities enabling GKN Aerospace to scale-up the solutions developed early in the project and bring them to a high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) Identify and pursue opportunities for technical innovation and intellectual property (IP) development. Work with the systems architects, design engineers and specialists to ensure that a holistic approach to developing the system requirements is followed. Derive technical requirements and specifications, then plan and execute their verification and validation Define, develop and deliver motor control software in safety-critical, high-performance applications Participate in in-depth analysis of test data and contribute to technical reports and presentations

Essential:

Experience of system level simulation of motor drives (including electronics and software aspects of the drive)  Experience of integrated development and optimisation of machine design and control  Experience of motor control techniques for low and high speed, single-phase and multi-phase permanent magnet motors Practical and laboratory experience in testing of motors and associated power systems Hands-on experience in rapid control prototyping, using dSPACE or Speedgoat  Experience of communication interfaces, such as CAN, SPI, etc.

Desirable:

Degree in electrical engineering, controls or equivalent qualification Coding skills for Arm-processor and FPGA applications are desirable
