Why this role is important for CPI’s work

CPI has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist 2 to join their in vitro diagnostic devices team. Based at The Coxon Building, Sedgefield, the Scientist 2 will contribute to the delivery and realisation of project work through preparation, development, research, design, testing and analysis work in line with the in vitro diagnostics team and Photonics & Electronics technology team requirements. This will involve applying scientific knowledge, using functional printing, and coating techniques, and analytical equipment to characterise device performance.

Reporting to the Team Leader – IVD, the Scientist 2 will work using their own initiative and with some technical supervision from both their manager and senior colleagues, assisting with development and improvement activities and will be responsible for: supporting the smooth running of laboratories, acting as the safety supervisor for the diagnostics lab and actively supporting the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) objectives.

The Role

  • Designing sensor architecture, materials selection, sensor design (could include modelling, substrate selection), sensor layout. The role would focus on bio-medical/electrochemical sensors for metabolites such as glucose, lactate and other biomarkers.
  • Actively engaging in hazard studies / SRA studies and discussions, as appropriate to role level.
  • Setting up, planning and executing experimental / pilot scale runs and analysing, interpreting and reporting the results of these within agreed timescales and standards and in accordance with project requirements.
  • Being responsible for providing clearly documented records of technical data, decisions, methodologies, calculations and software use in an agreed format.
  • Taking ownership in agreeing weekly workplans with line manager, project manager(s) and other relevant stakeholders, and delivering plan to agreed schedule.
  • Conducting state of the art research, developing new processes, fabricating sensor devices for a variety of biological applications using functional coating techniques, and carrying out electrochemical device testing and validation.

The person we are seeking

It is essential you are qualified to a minimum of HNC / Foundation Degree / Degree level (or equivalent) in a Scientific / Engineering discipline, have industrial experience and:

  • Have practical experience applying electrochemical sensing to biological analysis.
  • Have a good knowledge of, experience in and understanding of the principles and practice of sensor system design, materials selection, sensor functional design, sensor fabrication (by techniques such as printing or thin film deposition and pattering) and sensor test and validation.
  • Possess technical expertise through theory and a good underpinning knowledge, as well as evidence of technical problem solving.
  • Can exhibit professional mastery of principles and practices in device technology, gained in academic or industrial environments.
  • Can demonstrate evidence of knowledge sharing and network building practice across teams or groups.
  • Possess the ability to apply theoretical and practical scientific/engineering methods to contribute to business activities.
  • Can provide examples of actively utilising cross-team collaboration to achieve desired results.
  • Have confidence to use own judgement and initiative within standard engineering/scientific practices, as well as an understanding of when to seek advice from colleagues.

It is desirable that you are educated to Masters / PhD level (or equivalent) in a Scientific / Engineering discipline and:

  • Have specific experience in the electrochemical detection of biomarkers with clinical significance.
  • Possess knowledge or experience of other in vitro diagnostic methods.
  • Have experience in taking a set of requirements from concept to production.
  • Have an understanding of medical device ISO standards including ISO 9001, ISO 13485, ISO 14971 and IEC 60601 – 1.
  • Hold chartered status with a relevant professional institution.
