We are seeking to hire a Research Associate (Post-Docs) to join the CHEDDAR Communications Hub. CHEDDAR is dedicated to advancing future communications. Funded by the EPSRC through the Technology Missions Fund (TMF), CHEDDAR sits alongside the other telecoms hubs of TITAN and HASC. CHEDDAR explores how communications systems can underpin next generation computing and how cloud systems and AI can bolster communications, as well as working in sensing and communications.
This particular position will carry out research that combines RF sensing and RIS: Reflective Intelligent Surfaces (aka IRS) and integrating this into an ISAC: Integrated Sensing and Communications (aka JSAC) infrastructure. The research will involve building demonstrations of such systems, but this is driven from the fundamental theoretical knowledge that underpin them.
CHEDDAR explores where the world of communications interfaces with next generation computing, distributed systems. You will be co-creating new models, algorithms and schemes to advance the field of joint sensing and communications for 6G telecoms and way beyond.
It will be expected that the candidate will have a PhD in a Communications field that demonstrates knowledge of the spectrum of the subject from theory to practical implementation.
You will have experience in publishing research in leading conferences and journals.
You will demonstrate the ability to build proofs-of-concept of such systems and have a practical understanding of:
Signal processing algorithms, Channel modelling Antennas and RF sensing Machine learning for communications systems Machine Learning for human activity classification and poise determination. You will enjoy adventure in research, broadening your knowledge and trying new things.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant, salary range £43,003 - £46,297
This position presents a novel opportunity to work alongside Professor McCann and her UK wide Hub team in realizing their full potential and planning for the future. Professor McCann is the PI of CHEDDAR- a close collaboration of academics and researchers from Imperial, Cranfield, York, Leeds, Glasgow and Durham Universities as well as partners from industry. The partner list is expected to grow as the Hub activities commence. You will be also working with leading researchers across the UK and join the Federated Communications Hubs, a world-leading ecosystem consisting of over 30 universities spanning research from spectrum, quantum, networks of networks to AI and Cloud native communications.
You will have the opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution. Imperial College is consistently in the top 10 world university rankings with the Department of Computing ranked top of the 2021 UK REF assessment. McCann’s Adaptive Emergent Systems Engineering Group (AESE) at Imperial recently won the 2020 President’s Medal for Outstanding Research.
You will receive a sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 38 days off a year) and a comprehensive early career development support package including 10 training and development days.
