Job Description

This client is one of the market leaders in cutting‑edge optoelectronic devices for the next generation of optical communications networks. They are looking for an experienced engineer to join their team of experts, providing a key influence in the development and research of III‑V optical chip components. This team focuses on the design, development, and mass production of advanced and novel III‑V photonic devices. You will be key in driving innovative ideas from research phases to New Product Introduction, through to mass production. There is much scope to this role, including contributing to technical roadmaps, bringing valuable industry insights, analyzing market trends, and defining technical specifications of photonic devices. Naturally, close collaboration with various global business units and customers will be needed to identify their needs and develop cutting‑edge solutions to meet these requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and development of Photonic Integrated Circuits and discrete active photonic III‑V components.
  • Facilitate external collaborations with academic and industrial partners, offering industry insight analysis, and identifying opportunities for technical and academic partnerships.
  • Set the technical direction for projects or spearhead specific technical packages within Research or Development initiatives.
  • Investigate and analyze new directions for the application of III‑V photonic and IC technology, influencing internal technology and product strategies.
  • Design, plan, and implement strategies for project‑based design, simulation, and characterization.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Design, Process, Fabrication, and Test departments to ensure specifications and project technical requirements are met efficiently.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years in the photonics field, with a robust background in industry or academia, focusing on the development of III‑V photonic devices.
  • Proven expertise in the R&D of key photonic devices such as laser diodes, modulators, detectors, amplifiers, or fiber‑based technologies.
  • Extensive understanding of the optical communication and consumer photonics market, including applications in DCI, Metro, Long‑haul links, WDM, wireless, and sensing.
  • PhD in Physics, Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Deep knowledge of III‑V optoelectronic device physics, alongside familiarity with leading‑edge semiconductor manufacturing processes and epitaxy methods.
  • Experience in the design and/or characterization of optoelectronic devices, both DC and RF, showcasing strong technical proficiency.
  • Exceptional skills in data analysis, along with outstanding presentation and communication abilities, enabling clear and impactful dissemination of complex information.

Additional Qualifications (nice to have)

  • A solid understanding of IEEE standards and MSA agreements relevant to the field.
  • Proficiency in electromagnetic simulations using tools such as FDTD, FEM, mode solvers, and multi‑physics modules (e.g., COMSOL, VPI), as well as k*P modeling and semiconductor laser simulations.
  • Familiarity with Python or similar programming languages for efficient data analysis.
  • A track record of publication and active participation in conferences, complemented by strong public speaking skills, reflecting an ability to share insights and results with the wider community.
