At Universal Quantum we are creating the impossible. Together we are creating truly impactful quantum computers. We are looking to hire an experimental quantum physicist with experience calibrating, characterising, and operating experiments for quantum technologies. Passionate about helping create technologies which can change the world? We may be the right place for you so get in touch!

What You’ll Accomplish

  • Apply previous experience in experimental quantum technologies to operate ion-trap quantum computing hardware.
  • Develop quantum control protocols for ion shuttling and quantum gates.
  • Perform calibration, optimisation, and characterisation procedures on quantum computing hardware.
  • Develop theoretical models and simulations to compare experimental measurements with predicted quantum dynamics.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary and experienced team of Software Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Physicists and Quantum Engineers.
  • Assist in developing new concepts and develop new technologies for future products.

Requirements

The most critical attributes we’ll use to compare candidates

  1. Experience with laser cooling and trapping of ions.
  2. Experience operating and calibrating optical, RF and microwave control hardware.
  3. Working knowledge of precision-timed control systems and signal processing.
  4. Experience implementing quantum gates, quantum algorithms and/or quantum simulations.
  5. Experience implementing a variety of quantum control protocols on hardware.
  6. Ability to perform simulations and modelling to inform experiments.

Must-have

  • PhD and ideally postdoc experience.
  • 5+ years (degree-inclusive) experience involving calibrating, characterising, and operating experiments for quantum technologies.
  • 5+ years (degree-inclusive) experience trapping ions, characterising qubits, implementing quantum gates, randomized benchmarking, and/or running algorithms.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with published results in field of research.
  • Strong organizational skills, and experience working and negotiating with customers and partners.

Nice-to-have

  • Knowledge of surface ion traps.
  • Knowledge of Ytterbium ion qubits.
  • Proficient in Python.

Benefits

Competitive salary, equity options, unlimited holiday allowance, flexible and remote working options, 10% matching pension, generous parental support policy, private health/dental insurance, and relocation support.
