Quantum Detectors is a high-tech spinout from STFC and Diamond Light Source, based at Harwell Campus. We develop cutting-edge detector technology used in world-leading X-ray and electron microscopy labs. Our products help scientists push the boundaries of materials science, biology and physics.
 
We are seeking a UI/UX Software Engineer with strong Qt and C++ skills to take the lead in designing and building modern, user-friendly interfaces for our detector control software. You’ll work closely with scientists and engineers to make our powerful tools accessible and intuitive, ultimately accelerating research.
 
As we prepare to launch the next generation of our detector systems, this role is central to improving the usability and accessibility of our technology for labs around the world.
 
Key responsibilities:

Design and implement clean, user-friendly interfaces for scientific software using Qt and C++
Collaborate with scientists and engineers to understand user needs and workflows
Test, troubleshoot, and refine UI features to ensure smooth user experiences
Document UI components and usage to support maintainability and onboarding
Contribute to broader software and product development efforts as needed
Stay current with industry trends in UX design, scientific software, and Qt best practices
 
Essential qualifications and experience:

A degree in Computer Science, Digital Design, or a related field
Experience developing UIs in Qt and C++, with clean, elegant design sensibilities
Familiarity with Python and cross-platform development (Linux & Windows)
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
A collaborative, hands-on approach to problem-solving
 
Desirable experience:

Experience working with scientific software
Experience working with industrial control or data processing systems
 
As part of a multidisciplinary development team you will be expected to have an all hands on deck attitude to work, your role and responsibilities will be dictated by the business needs and will, at times, be outside of those detailed above.
 
The successful candidate will become part of a supportive team, benefit from excellent facilities at the world class Harwell Oxford science campus (sports facilities, cafes, social club, library, restaurant, etc).
 
This permanent full-time position offers a 35-hour working week with flexible working hours, hybrid working, 30 days holiday and a generous pension contribution.
