What is the job?

As a Technical Writer you will be working closely with the Engineering Team to support strategic efforts aimed at improving the content of all current customer facing documents and writing new content for new product releases for the UK manufacturing division. Initiatives also include development of application based technical content for our products and services, to promote ease of understanding for complex systems, products, services and software.

 

This is a maternity cover of 6-9 months.

 

Working Hours:Monday to Friday 8.00 am – 4.30 pm (Hybrid working available)

Thorlabs is a global, industry leading optical technologies company. We are experts in the design and manufacture or a range of innovative photonics products. We use these products in manufacturing and research, from fibre optics to piezo motors. We are the gold standard with optics laboratories worldwide. There are now 22 facilities across the world in 9 countries. Here in Ely, we are responsible for the Motion Control and Optical Tables product line.

 

Where you will be working?

It’s a hybrid role, working in our new purpose-built facility in Witchford, Ely as well as your home. Our purpose-built facility is just 12 miles from Cambridge, within the beautiful mediaeval city of Ely. There are train and bus links to Ely from Kings Cross and Liverpool Street London, and our site is within distance of Ely train station and Ely Bus station.

Requirements

What is essential to us…

  • Degree in Scientific, Engineering or equivalent experience or qualifications.
  • Prior experience in technical writing of product and software documentation
  • Prior experience with creating videos for technical products (desirable)
  • Knowledge of the photonics industry and typical customer (desirable)
  • Proficient in Microsoft software packages, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud apps
  • Ability to deliver high quality documentation, with attention to detail
  • Proven ability to collaborate with colleagues from various disciplines across multiple global offices
  • Positive contribution to multi-departmental initiatives and process improvements
  • Adhering to core values and driven positive attitude
  • Receptive to new challenges and expanding current knowledge.

What we would like you to do/ to see…

  • Prepare, review, and maintain technical documents for existing and new products
  • Work with internal teams to obtain an in-depth understanding of the product and the documentation requirements
  • Regularly review technical content of web presentations of UK manufactured products and liaise with the Marketing team to make any improvements. Updates can include but are not limited to:
  • Expanded web content (features, applications, video, images, etc.)
  • Enhanced keywords to improve performance on external search engines
  • Ensure drawings and photos show key features
  • Test products in our lab to better translate relevant information to the end user of the product
