Quantum is now, and it's built here.

Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve.

Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.

The Role
We are looking for a Supply Chain & Inventory Manager to join IonQ’s Operations team as we continue to scale our European presence. In this role, you will be responsible for establishing and operating robust inventory and logistics processes across the EU, supporting IonQ’s mission to build and deliver the world’s most advanced quantum computing systems.

You will play a key role in shaping the systems, partners, and processes that underpin Oxford Ionic/ IonQ’s European logistics and inventory operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and reliability as the company continues to grow globally.

What you will be responsible for

In this position, you will take hands-on ownership of EU inventory and logistics execution, working across warehousing, third-party logistics partners, carriers, and internal stakeholders to ensure materials move efficiently and compliantly.

You will have the opportunity to build structure where little currently exists, improve inventory accuracy and visibility, and support the successful implementation of ERP-driven inventory processes. Your work will directly enable IonQ’s manufacturing, engineering, and operational teams as we scale quantum hardware production.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Owning inventory control, accuracy, and cycle counting processes across EU warehouse locations
  • Managing ERP and WMS tools to track inventory, material movements, and transactions, ensuring data integrity and reporting accuracy
  • Driving reductions in inventory discrepancies, shrinkage, and obsolescence through disciplined inventory management practices
  • Managing relationships with third-party logistics providers, carriers, and customs brokers to ensure timely and cost-effective transportation across road, sea, and air
  • Working closely with Trade Compliance and Finance teams to ensure EU shipping, customs, and VAT processes are executed correctly and in line with internal controls
  • Supporting ERP transition activities, including inventory setup, process definition, and validation in collaboration with cross-functional teams
  • Acting as the primary operational point of contact for EU inventory and logistics matters, operating with a high degree of ownership and autonomy

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will bring strong foundations in supply chain, inventory, and logistics operations, with hands-on experience operating across European markets. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working in ambiguity, building processes from the ground up, and balancing strategic thinking with practical execution in a fast-moving, highly technical environment.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • Proven experience in inventory, logistics, or supply chain management roles, ideally within manufacturing, hardware, or technically complex environments
  • Hands-on experience managing European logistics and cross-border shipping operations
  • Mandatory experience working with ERP systems to manage inventory and logistics processes (Oracle NetSuite experience is a strong plus)
  • Confidence working with third-party vendors, including 3PLs, carriers, and brokers, and holding them accountable to service and cost expectations
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams
  • A proactive, hands-on mindset, with willingness to spend time in warehouse environments as needed and adapt to evolving operational requirements

Additional Information:

  • This role is an individual contributor position, with responsibility for establishing and scaling EU inventory and logistics team/capabilities as the function evolves
  • Occasional domestic and international travel may be required, expected to be no more than approximately 20%
  • The role will involve working in and around warehouse environments; physical requirements are aligned with standard operational site activity

Benefits

Be part of a team that’s shaping the future of quantum. We offer more than just a role, you’ll join a world class community of scientists, engineers and innovators working to unlock the full potential of quantum computing.

We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career alongside industry leaders, a competitive salary with IonQ stock options, an annual performance bonus, generous annual leave, flexible hybrid working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.

Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.

We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.

The Skills Gap in Quantum Computing Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Quantum computing stands at the frontier of technological innovation. Promising breakthroughs in areas as diverse as cryptography, materials discovery, optimisation and machine learning, quantum technologies are shifting from academic research to early commercial deployment. Governments, defence organisations, finance firms and tech innovators around the world — including in the UK — are investing heavily in quantum talent and capability. Yet despite this surge in interest and investment, employers consistently report a troubling trend: Many graduates with quantum computing qualifications are not prepared for real-world quantum computing jobs. This isn’t a reflection on students’ intelligence or effort. Rather, it reveals a persistent skills gap between what universities teach and what organisations actually need. In this article, we’ll explore that gap in depth — what universities do well, where programmes fall short, why the divide persists, what employers actually want, and how jobseekers can bridge that gap to build successful careers in quantum computing.

Quantum Computing Jobs for Career Switchers in Their 30s, 40s & 50s (UK Reality Check)

Quantum computing is exciting. Headlines about qubits, quantum advantage and futuristic breakthroughs can make it seem like the preserve of physicists in high-tech labs. But for career switchers in their 30s, 40s or 50s in the UK, the truth is both broader and more practical: there are real job opportunities connected to quantum computing that don’t require you to come straight out of a PhD programme. This article gives you a grounded UK-focused reality check on quantum computing jobs, what roles genuinely exist, which ones are suited to career switchers, what skills employers actually hire for, how long retraining realistically takes and how to position your experience for success. Whether you’re coming from IT, engineering, project management, research support, operations, compliance or even sales & communications — there are ways to pivot into this fast-growing field if you approach it strategically.

How to Write a Quantum Job Ad That Attracts the Right People

Quantum computing is no longer confined to university labs and research papers. UK companies are now actively hiring quantum software engineers, physicists, hardware specialists, cryptographers and commercial leads as the sector moves closer to real-world deployment. But while demand for quantum talent is rising, many employers are struggling to attract the right candidates. Roles attract either underqualified applicants who see “quantum” as a buzzword, or highly academic researchers who are a poor fit for commercial environments. The problem often isn’t the candidate pool — it’s the job advert. Writing a strong quantum job ad requires a very different approach to traditional tech hiring. Quantum professionals are highly specialised, sceptical of hype and acutely aware when an employer doesn’t truly understand the field. In this guide, we’ll break down how to write a quantum job ad that attracts the right people, filters out the wrong ones and positions your organisation as a serious, credible player in the quantum ecosystem.
