The Role

This role is for an experienced HTS magnet design engineer to design, build and test HTS magnets. STEP is likely to have the largest HTS magnets in the world and developing successful designs relies heavily on demonstrating HTS technology in sub-scale ‘model coils’. You’ll be the lead design engineer responsible for delivering the STEP model coil programme which will involve devising strategic technology development plans and leading a multi-disciplinary team to deliver on these plans.

You’ll specify design activities, including multi-physics analyses, oversee magnet fabrication and assembly, and supervise testing of the STEP model coils. This involves a deep understanding of sub-component technology, such as high-current HTS cables and quench protection systems, which will be developed at pace in an adjacent team. As such, you’ll be the main interface with this team whilst also working closely with the STEP power plant concept development team to specify relevant model coil designs.

Communicating complex technical challenges and findings in a simple and effective manner to a range of audiences will be critical to success. The STEP programme has established exciting partnerships internationally and you’ll be required to work collaboratively and seek out new opportunities to expand our HTS magnets capability further.
