Overview

The research group of Professor Andrea Morello has an opening for a postdoctoral Research Associate / Senior Research Associate. The group specialises in the development of quantum computing hardware based on the spin of implanted donors, integrated within silicon nanoelectronic devices. Your role will be to conduct research of theoretical nature. The research project this role will be working on is aimed at the demonstration of quantum information processing with high-spin nuclei in silicon, exploiting the high dimensionality of the Hilbert space to encode robust logical qubits. The focus of the project is on the demonstration of fault-tolerant quantum operations, quantum error correction, and scalability beyond one atom. As a theory-focused Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in the group, you will be responsible for developing new theory for quantum information processing in high-dimensional systems and informing future directions for the experimental effort.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct theoretical research related to quantum information processing in high-dimensional systems (high-spin nuclei in silicon).
  • Develop new theory for quantum information processing and quantum error correction; inform future directions for experimental work.
  • Collaborate with experimental teams to ensure theoretical approaches align with practical devices and scalability goals.
QualificationsResearch Associate (Level A)
  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) in quantum physics, quantum engineering, or related area.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop original theory in quantum information processing and quantum error correction.
  • Experience applying quantum information theory to practical experimental platforms.
  • Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Strong record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • Understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives, and values, along with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to implement UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
Senior Research Associate (Level B)
  • PhD in Physics, Quantum Engineering, or related area. Previous postdoctoral experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of developing original theory in quantum information processing and quantum error correction.
  • Experience applying quantum information theory to practical experimental platforms.
  • Track record in developing original research directions in quantum information theory.
  • Experience in day-to-day supervision of PhD and undergraduate students.
  • Ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Strong publication and conference presentation record, with evidence of leadership in writing peer-reviewed works.
  • Ability to work in a team and collaborate across disciplines; strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience supervising honours and postgraduate researchers.
  • Understanding of UNSW aims and policies; commitment to health and safety policies.
