What is the job?

We're looking for a Quality Engineer to ensure that incoming materials and manufactured products meet quality standards, and follow procedures and processes required to minimise quality costs and maximise customer satisfaction.

Working Hours:Monday to Friday 8.00 am - 4.30pm

Thorlabs is a global, industry leading optical technologies company. We are experts in the design and manufacture or a range of innovative photonics products. We use these products in manufacturing and research, from fibre optics to piezo motors. We are the gold standard with optics laboratories worldwide. There are now 22 facilities across the world in 9 countries. Here in Ely, we are responsible for the Motion Control and Optical Tables product line.

Where you will be working?

Our purpose-built facility is just 12 miles from Cambridge, within the beautiful mediaeval city of Ely. There are train and bus links to Ely from Kings Cross and Liverpool Street London, and our site is within distance of Ely train station and Ely Bus station.

Requirements

What is essential to us...

  1. Previous experience in a Quality role or leading position
  2. Good understanding of metrology
  3. Previous use of measuring tools and equipment
  4. Understanding of software and measurement systems
  5. Detail orientated, with ability to interpret technical drawings and documentation
  6. Computer literate with experience using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  7. Ability to multitask, time manage and work independently
  8. Ability to identify and resolve problems quickly
  9. Ability to take initiatives, with a positive approach to continuous improvement activities
  10. Receptive to new challenges and expanding current knowledge.
  11. Excellent written and verbal communication skills

What we would like you to do/ to see...

  1. Provide measurement services to ensure compliance to dimensional and visual specification of components (incoming) and assemblies at all stages of manufacture (including production rejects and outgoing inspection)
  2. Conduct First Article Inspections of new parts or parts changing vendors as required
  3. Operate all measuring equipment within the metrology area
  4. Provide support to Quality Inspectors with outgoing inspection
  5. Provide support to Quality Inspector with incoming & outgoing RMA shipments, including processing RMA sales order
  6. Assist in developing SOP's and clear methodologies for inspection for current and future products
  7. Work on improvement projects following LEAN initiative to help production increase part quality
  8. Maintain effective and efficient communication with suppliers, as well as internal and external customers, while answering their questions, and updating them regarding the status of RMA, NCR, or corrective action reports.
  9. Recommend drawing changes, handle concessions and coordinate with the production team on quality issues accordingly
  10. Carry out administrative tasks such as raising NCRs, Corrective actions report and logging faults
  11. Assist with stock control in the RMA and Q1 warehouses, and support product recalls
  12. Ensure that RMA and Quality departmental KPIs are consistently met
