About UsDiamond Light Source is the UKs national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.About the RoleWe now have an opportunity for a Beamline Technician or Senior Beamline Technician to work as part of the Magnetic Materials Group on beamline I16. The primary purpose of this role is to maintain, develop, and support the operational and scientific research activities of beamline I16 which performs experiments to study novel quantum and energy materials. You will support the Beamline in the following areas:Mechanical and electrical installation of bespoke, prototype, high-tech equipment including: Ultra-High Vacuum optical components such as monochromators, mirrors, gratingsVacuum equipment including pumps, gauges, controllers etc.Detectors including vacuum detectorsDiffractometer/goniometer and sample environment equipmentWork on electro-mechanical aspects of the scientific instrumentation including racks and field equipment and installation of motors and electrical sensors for items such as vacuum, pneumatics, water flow and temperature monitoring.Maintaining and upgrading existing beamline equipment. For the Senior Beamline technician, you will also support in the following areas:Installation, commissioning, and maintenance of specialist beamline equipment including: Detectors and related electrical aspects.Diffractometer/ goniometer/sample stages (sample orientation and motion equipment).Experimental chambers that provide high/ low temperature and or high/low pressure, gas and liquid flow, or high magnetic field environments for sample testing.Robotic/ automated/remote controlled sample handling equipment.Installation of motors and electrical sensors for items such as pressure/vacuum, pneumatics, water flow and temperature monitoring.Supervision of junior internal or external staff / contractors.Supervision and coordination of work on different beamlines within the group.Operation of advanced instrumentation or advanced sample handling.Assisting users with equipment in preparing and setting up experiments including using peripheral laboratory equipment/workshop.Applicants will be considered at either Beamline Technician or Senior Beamline Technician level, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications.About YouYou will have a ONC or GNVQ level 2 or equivalent work experience, as well as experience and ability in the following areas:Understanding and interpreting mechanical drawings.Carrying out a variety of light mechanical and electrical assembly tasks. This can involve building new equipment/developments for subsystems of the scientific equipment such as cryogenic sample environments under high vacuum.Supervising and coordinating the installation and commissioning of specialist beamline equipment. To get to the heart of the problem and take it effectively through to completion. To be considered for the Senior position, you will also demonstrate the following:Experience with ultra-high vacuum and high-vacuum systems.Proven experience in at least one of the following areas: cryogenics, precision mechanics, motion systems, scientific instrumentation.Familiarity with using quality assurance procedures, work planning and safe systems of work.Experience of Technical Support in a synchrotron or equivalent facility.Ability to machine small components for UHV.The beamline uses area detectors, cryogenic sample environments, magnetic and electric fields as well as high-precision strain application apparatus. An understanding of a research environment as well as installing scientific equipment would be an advantage.BenefitsDiamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme. The Skills Gap in Quantum Computing Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Quantum computing stands at the frontier of technological innovation. Promising breakthroughs in areas as diverse as cryptography, materials discovery, optimisation and machine learning, quantum technologies are shifting from academic research to early commercial deployment. Governments, defence organisations, finance firms and tech innovators around the world — including in the UK — are investing heavily in quantum talent and capability. Yet despite this surge in interest and investment, employers consistently report a troubling trend: Many graduates with quantum computing qualifications are not prepared for real-world quantum computing jobs. This isn’t a reflection on students’ intelligence or effort. Rather, it reveals a persistent skills gap between what universities teach and what organisations actually need. In this article, we’ll explore that gap in depth — what universities do well, where programmes fall short, why the divide persists, what employers actually want, and how jobseekers can bridge that gap to build successful careers in quantum computing.

Quantum Computing Jobs for Career Switchers in Their 30s, 40s & 50s (UK Reality Check)

Quantum computing is exciting. Headlines about qubits, quantum advantage and futuristic breakthroughs can make it seem like the preserve of physicists in high-tech labs. But for career switchers in their 30s, 40s or 50s in the UK, the truth is both broader and more practical: there are real job opportunities connected to quantum computing that don’t require you to come straight out of a PhD programme. This article gives you a grounded UK-focused reality check on quantum computing jobs, what roles genuinely exist, which ones are suited to career switchers, what skills employers actually hire for, how long retraining realistically takes and how to position your experience for success. Whether you’re coming from IT, engineering, project management, research support, operations, compliance or even sales & communications — there are ways to pivot into this fast-growing field if you approach it strategically.

How to Write a Quantum Job Ad That Attracts the Right People

Quantum computing is no longer confined to university labs and research papers. UK companies are now actively hiring quantum software engineers, physicists, hardware specialists, cryptographers and commercial leads as the sector moves closer to real-world deployment. But while demand for quantum talent is rising, many employers are struggling to attract the right candidates. Roles attract either underqualified applicants who see “quantum” as a buzzword, or highly academic researchers who are a poor fit for commercial environments. The problem often isn’t the candidate pool — it’s the job advert. Writing a strong quantum job ad requires a very different approach to traditional tech hiring. Quantum professionals are highly specialised, sceptical of hype and acutely aware when an employer doesn’t truly understand the field. In this guide, we’ll break down how to write a quantum job ad that attracts the right people, filters out the wrong ones and positions your organisation as a serious, credible player in the quantum ecosystem.
