Tokamak Energy, founded in 2009 as a spin-off from UK Atomic Energy Authority, currently employs a growing team of over 260 people with experts from the UK and around the world. It combines world leading scientific, engineering, industrial and commercial capabilities. The company has more than 75 families of patent applications and has raised $335 million, comprising $275m from private investors and $60m from the UK and U.S. governments. Our U.S. subsidiary, Tokamak Energy Inc, was established in 2019.

Overview of the role

Salary:£15,500 per annum plus incremental increase each year.

Hours:37.5 per week.

Start date:September 2025.

TE Magnetics is a new business division within Tokamak Energy. We want to usher in the HTS era. This is a production leadership role within the MBU focused on developing and improving our production structures to manage day-to-day activities across the manufacturing section of the MBU. We recognise we are in our infancy, but we are ambitious and have big plans to grow fast and make a global impact. We need a production leader to help us shape our processes to ensure we operate efficiently and effectively where each contributing member is maximising the use of their key skills.

As a Tokamak Energy L3 Mechatronics Apprentice, you will have the opportunity to work across the magnets manufacturing team as well as all our TEM teams under the guidance, mentorship, and support of our highly skilled and experienced team members. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to attend relevant courses and workshops to further your development.

The L3 apprenticeship qualification will cover the following content:

  1. Health and safety in the engineering environment
  2. Mechanical principles
  3. Engineering principles
  4. PLC
  5. Engineering drawings, design, and CAD
  6. Additive Manufacturing
  7. Assembly
  8. Hand fitting
  9. Digital manufacturing
  10. Engineering mathematics
  11. Project skills, manufacturing skills - magnets manufacturing
  12. Mechanical assembly and hands-on activities
  13. Magnets testing

Other areas of learning that will be covered as part of your apprenticeship will include:

  1. Robotic programming & Maintenance
  2. Fluid power
  3. Electronics
  4. Electrical installation/Fault finding
  5. Laser processing
  6. Automation & Robotics
  7. Electro-pneumatic and hydraulics

During this 3-year apprenticeship, you will embark on a dedicated engineering path which incorporates attending OAS, our chosen training provider, located in Culham. You can find out more information about OAS at https://www.oas.ukaea.uk/.

Please see the structure of your Level 3 apprenticeship below:

  1. Year 1:As an apprentice at OAS, your first year will consist of block release between the OAS training centre and at Tokamak Energy. You will complete your foundation skills training as well as starting your advanced manufacturing diploma.
  2. Year 2:You will return to your employer full time, using your foundational training to add value to your company. You will continue to develop your skills and behaviours by completing on-the-job learning whilst continuing your Level 3 knowledge-based diploma back at OAS on a block release basis.
  3. Year 3:You will work with Tokamak Energy to continue your Level 3 work-based competency diploma. You will also start to prepare for your End Point Assessment (EPA).

You will have dedicated support from our team throughout your apprenticeship. Tokamak Energy strongly believes in building a high standard of in-house capability, starting with our apprentices. We offer the combination of a research and development, maintenance, and manufacturing environment for you to work within; through this you will experience working in a delivery focused and innovative workplace. You will have the opportunity to grow in confidence, learn to work as part of a team and solve problems on a daily basis.

What qualifications will you receive through completion of the apprenticeship?

  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
  • Successful completion of an ‘End Point Assessment', leading to professional recognition by a relevant Engineering Institution.

Requirements

Eligibility:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age at the commencement of the apprenticeship.
  • Eligible to live and work in the UK for the entirety of the apprenticeship and have resided in the UK for at least 3 years prior to starting the apprenticeship.
  • Achieved GCSE grades 4-9 / A*-C in Maths and English Language or English Literature (or equivalent). Equivalent could include a Level 2 college course that included their Level 2 Maths and English subjects.
