At ZeroAvia, we’re clean sky thinkers. For the world to achieve truly clean, guilt-free flight, we need a scalable solution; hydrogen-electric powertrains. As a leader in zero-emission aviation and a UK Jet Zero Council member, we’re designing and commercialising hydrogen-powered solutions that will positively impact the future of aviation, global connectivity, and the world.

Engineering designs our next-generation hydrogen electric engines. Working across Hydrogen, Propulsion and Integration divisions, they solve technical problems and help decarbonize aviation by finding solutions for electric propulsion, hydrogen storage, fuel cell technology, power distribution, thermal management and more.

Cotswold Airport (Kemble) Join us at Cotswold Airport, home to some of our aircraft and the workplace of many ZeroAvians. Located just outside the historic market town of Cirencester, you’ll experience a workspace built by engineers for engineers. This is a high-velocity and fast-paced environment with good links to the M4 and M5, so it’s fitting that it’s also our UK Head Office.

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Hydrogen Engineer to join our Infrastructure Team. This position involves close collaboration with product delivery, project management, and aircraft hydrogen teams, and plays a key role in driving hydrogen and energy infrastructure via a compelling use-case, namely airports as energy hubs, and aircraft as a primary off-taker. The successful candidate will possess excellent creative engineering skills, expanding a set of complex programs involving liquid hydrogen, gaseous hydrogen, and conversion technologies.

Although project sizes may be modest initially, we anticipate that they will become larger and more complex over the next 12-24 months, with multiple stakeholders and eventual scaling to multi-million dollar investments. Initially, this role will involve opportunities in the US, UK, and EU.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead hydrogen infrastructure product development from Concept to Execution.  Responsible to lead FEED (Front End Engineering and Development) efforts to develop concepts and designs.  Assess the trade-offs of the design and lead shepherd products through execution and commissioning.
  • Design and integrate hydrogen generation, conditioning, storage, transmission and refuelling systems.  System level design, not component level.  Systems processes are gaseous and liquid (cryogenic) hydrogen or a combination of the two.
  • Evaluate chemical processes and the associated equipment to optimize performance and ensure safe operations.  Lead HAZIDs, HAZOPs and zoning studies.
  • Model gaseous and liquid hydrogen systems with Matlab, Simulink, Simscape product suite to design hydrogen distribution and refuelling infrastructure products.  Lead feedback sessions on own work and provide feedback on modelling work done by other team members.
  • Identify where first principle flow analysis requires additional fidelity.  Bound the problem and use CFD to understand the flow dynamics and propose solutions with trade-offs identified.

Requirements

    • Expertise in process engineering, process design and process safety reviews (e.g. HAZIDs, HAZOPs).
    • Experience with gaseous processes technology (bonus for cryogenics and for experience with hydrogen).
    • Proficient with Matlab, Simulink and Simscape product suite
    • Fundamental understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluids.  Candidate will be expected to apply these principles to optimize processes and ensure safe operations.
    • Proficient with Siemens NX (StarCCM+ is a bonus).  Experience with SolidWorks is also acceptable but ZeroAvia uses the Siemens product suite.
    • Ability to deliver results and prioritize work load.  Experience in various roles encompassing gas technologies, cryogenics, operations (such as refining or chemicals), and engineering

Who are we?
