About the Role

The Applied Scientist role will help OQCs Material Science and Device Engineering team to analyse data, and interpret results related to superconducting devices. They will develop data-backed recommendations to guide our team in improvements to the choice of materials and techniques as well as our nanofabrication processes. 

  • Analysing large datasets to extract insights and trends to support the advancement of our material characterisation and fabrication processes for superconducting devices. 
  • Developing scripts that extract information from a variety of data sources and formats
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to better understand OQCs data needs, developing data collection systems and providing results-driven recommendations
  • Creating automations for data and KPI tracking 
  • Generating high quality and detailed reports on findings
  • Sharing coding and analysis expertise with the wider team.

Person Specification

Essential skills and experience:

  • Strong background in data science skills, with experience in image processing and statistical methods demonstrated via previous work/research
  • Knowledge of fabrication techniques and characterisation methods for thin films, multilayers, and nano/micro structures.
  • Highly skilled in Python, and related libraries for data management, statistics, and data visualisation tools
  • Effective communication and presentation skills for seamless collaboration across diverse technical teams and levels
  • PhD or Master’s degree in physics, materials science, or a similar field
  • Autonomous motivation and prioritisation of workload
  • Analytical Thinking and attention to detail

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Experience working with Machine learning
  • Experience with professional software development
  • Use of code-sharing and control platforms (Git, Bitbucket etc.) 
  • Hands-on experience of experiments and techniques. (metrology, characterisation, fabrication)
